Low Thia Khiang (2011)

Low Thia Khiang (Chinese: 刘程强; Pinyin: Liú Chéngqiáng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lâu Thiâⁿ-kiàng; * September 5, 1956 ) is a Singaporean politician and businessman. He was the leader of the Labor Party (WP) and the leader of the opposition in parliament . He had been a member of parliament (MP) since 1991 and represented the Hougang constituency for individual members from 1991 to 2011 and the constituency for the representation of the Aljunied GRC since 2011 (see Singapore_Parliament # electoral system ).

Low is one of six elected opposition MPs in Singapore's 13th Parliament.

Low attended Lik Teck Primary School and Chung Cheng High School before studying at Nanyang University . In 1981 he received a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Chinese from the National University of Singapore. In 1982 he completed a diploma in education. He worked as a teacher for several years before starting his own company.

Between 1997 and 2011, Low and Chiam were the only elected opposition MPs in parliament. In the 2011 parliamentary elections, Low and Chiam decided to waive their seats in Hougang and Potong Pasir SMC in order to compete against each other in the multi-person constituency Aljunied GRC and Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC. They risked that there would be no elected MPs in parliament. This strategy pays off for Low as he led the Labor Party to a historic breakthrough in the elections with a victory in Aljunied GRC. The victory marked the first time an opposition party had won a GRC and added five Labor MPs to parliament. His previous seat in Hougang SMC was retained by his party member Yaw Shin Leong.
