Luciano Gatto (born May 21, 1934 in Venice ) is an Italian cartoonist.

Career

Even as a child, Gatto loved reading and drawing comics, as did his father, who counted painting as one of his favorite pastimes. When he was finally introduced by his neighbor to Romano Scarpa, who was already known at the time, in 1955 , he began to draw comics professionally. Before that he was able to perfect his drawing style with the help of Scarpa.

In 1956 he began to draw comics himself, initially with self-invented protagonists , and sold them to the Bianconi publishing house . For four years later he also drew the comic "Raviolo Kid" for this publisher. At the same time, he also worked on other comics, some of them on his own creations. After assisting Scarpa with his drawings for a year, he was hired in 1958 as a Disney draftsman for the Italian Mickey Mouse magazine Topolino .

His first own story, “Paperino e il ciliegio rabdomante”, has not yet been published in Germany. Since 1958 Gatto created a variety of comics for Disney, since 1980 he worked as a writer, previously he was only active as a draftsman. In the 70s and 80s he also worked for foreign publishers and drew z. B. from 1979 to 1986 " Fix and Foxi " comics. Gatto continued to draw for numerous other publishers.

In 2019, the Topolino editorial team ended the collaboration for "economic reasons" after more than 60 years.

Today Luciano Gatto is married and has two children.

Drawing style

Typical of Gatto's drawings are the dreamy, half-closed eyes (in Disney drawings). Gatto himself said that this trait was caused by his own shyness as a child. Gatto has become one of the most famous people in the comic industry thanks to his special drawing style.

On the first page, Gatto keeps a cat scurrying through the picture, probably because Gatto is the Italian word for cat.
