The outdated designation air compressor for air compressor or compressor has been retained in German railway terminology and is almost exclusively used in railway operations.

Air compressor will drive vehicles used primarily to discuss the main air reservoir pipe , the air brakes to supply the train. In the locomotive, devices such as pantographs , main switches , switchgear , sand spreader are supplied, in passenger coaches the doors are often closed with compressed air drives. The rest of the train is supplied via the main air tank line.

The name is unusual for the Swiss and Austrian Federal Railways , the term compressor is used instead.
