Geological section with air saddle

In geology, when interpreting the geological structure of mountains and landscapes from a geological point of view , an air saddle is the conceptual addition of a fold saddle to an existing fold structure .

Originally there were at the corresponding location in the course of geological development a saddle, the apex and flanks then in later years by erosion were partially removed. In geological sections , air saddles are shown with dashed lines, which supplement the remaining folds at the corresponding points.

The term is common in the miners' language of the Ruhr area , among other things , as the wings of air saddles allowed mining south of the marl boundary very easy access to the coal seams .
