Luis Moses Gomez
Luis Moses Gomez (* around 1660) was a Sephardic Jewish merchant in colonial New York City .

The ancestors fled to the New World from the Spanish Inquisition . Later his family became one of the most important and respected traders. Gomez came to New York in 1703. He received British naturalization with residence in the colony in 1705. Citizenship enabled him to do business with England like any other Briton. He built the Gomez Mill House in Manhattan . The merchant lived there with his sons for about 30 years and successfully traded in skins and other goods. In 1727, Gomez helped begin the construction of the Shearith Israel Synagogue . The building is the oldest American synagogue. He was the first president of this Jewish community.
