Coaming
The coaming ( Low German for threshold ) or the coaming is the upright edging of openings in the deck of ships and boats . The hatch coaming or Lukenkumming (for ships), or the Denne tree (as inland waterway vessels) serves to stiffen the hull and provides a distinction from water which washes over the deck.
On smaller boats like kayaks , the coaming is only a few centimeters high. The elastic band of the spraydeck clings to it . On a ship that operates in the open sea, the hatch coaming of the cargo hatches can also be two meters and higher.
- Low hatch coaming on an older general cargo ship
- High hatch coaming on a container ship (right in the picture)
- The coaming of a white water kayak around which the spraydeck grips
