Luminar is universal image editing software developed by Skylum (formerly Macphun) and available for Windows and macOS .

Luminar can be operated as a stand-alone application or as a plug-in. The program has various filters that can be used to edit images. The resulting effects can then be combined with one another using layer editing and masking. Luminar works directly with raw data .

history

Macphun released Luminar in November 2016. An update with new tools and features called Luminar Neptune was released in 2017. Initially developed exclusively for macOS, Macphun released Luminar for Windows in 2018 towards the end of 2017. At the same time, the company announced that it would change its name to Skylum.

Luminar 2018, which was released in November 2017, introduced elements such as a RAW development module, an improved user interface and additional, new filters.

Luminar 3 was released in 2018. The version brought among other things a revised user interface.

Luminar 4 has now been released. In addition to new tools that are supported by machine learning , version 4 enables the sky in photos to be improved or replaced entirely. The presentation of the tool palette with the filters has been fundamentally revised and streamlined. Version 4.1.1 was released on February 10, 2020 with support for Dutch ; Furthermore, an improvement in speed was promised, instead there seem to be more problems. The current version is Luminar 4.2. The "Augmented Sky" tool is new in Luminar 4.2, with which it is possible to place different objects in the sky of photos. In addition, the portrait retouching has been slightly improved, as has the "Relight Scene" technology.

reception

Luminar has received generally positive reviews.

Luminar was named “Best Imaging Software 2017” by TIPA and “Best Software Plugin” by the Lucie Technical Awards in October 2017.

The - sometimes considerable - criticism of Luminar concerns the working speed even with powerful computers. Although this has improved from version to version, it still cannot compare to competing products. Even with the latest version 4.1.1 there are bugs and inadequacies that have led to the opinion that Skylum can only be used as a plug-in for other products. The main reason for the very slow processing is the almost non-existent use of multithreading , so that the use of modern processors with a high number of cores cannot bring any improvement. Skylum promises a remedy, but cannot give a schedule. Luminar is therefore not suitable for professional use or the processing of many images; on the other hand, the program offers automatic improvement functions that are practically impossible to achieve with any other software.
