Skylum (formerly Macphun) is a software manufacturer from Bellevue ( Washington , USA ). The company is known for its photo editing software Aurora HDR and Luminar from 2016, released in 2015. Other programs include Snapheal, Focus, Tonality, Intensify, Noiseless, FX Photo Studio and Photolemur.

The company was founded as Macphun in the Ukraine in 2008 and renamed Skylum in 2017 after the decision was made to develop software for Windows as well , which until then had only been available on Mac computers .

history

Skylum was founded in 2008 under the name Macphun by two game developers and amateur photographers in Ukraine. The company initially developed applications for the iOS mobile operating system . One of the first apps was Vintage Video Maker , which was later renamed Vintagio . Apple recorded Vintagio as one of the best iPhone of apps in 2009. In 2010 Alex Tsepko joined the team. In total, the company published over 60 applications in the first three years. Most of the downloads were recorded for photography applications. So Skylum decided to develop the same photo applications for MacOS.

In early 2010, Skylum released its first macOS application, FX Photo Studio Pro , which until then had only been available on iOS. Various other applications were then developed for MacOS, including Snapheal .

To better serve the North American market, the company relocated to San Diego, California, in 2013 . A large proportion of the employees were taken over by Nik Collection, which had recently been bought by Google . Later that year, the company released Intensify , a full-featured photo editing software that was named one of the best apps of 2013 on the Mac App Store . In 2014, Skylum released Tonality , a black and white image editing software that won Apple's Editors' Choice Of The Year. In the same year, Skylum recruited a team in Europe to develop localized versions of its software products and serve the European market.

In 2015, Skylum released a new noise reduction application called Noiseless . In the same year, the company began working with Trey Ratcliff to develop software for generating high-contrast images (HDRI). This cooperation resulted in the Aurora HDR program for processing and developing HDR photos in November 2015 . A year later, Skylum developed Luminar , a complete picture editing solution as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom .

In 2017, the company released the Windows versions of Aurora HDR and Luminar , which were previously only available for macOS. At the same time it was announced that Macphun would change its name to Skylum.
