Lupus alpha Asset Management AG is an owner-run independent asset management company and offers specialized investment solutions in the areas of alternative investments , small & mid caps and fixed income .

The company was founded in October 2000 and is headquartered in Frankfurt am Main.

history

In 2000 the company was founded as an owner-managed company with 11 employees in Frankfurt am Main. Of the founding partners, Ralf Lochmüller is still active in the management today.

In 2001 the company began its activities with a strategic focus on small and mid caps. Initially, a New Markets fund and a SMAX fund were launched, with fund assets under management of DM 350 million.

In 2003 Lupus alpha took advantage of the legal possibilities in the area of ​​absolute return ( Investment Act 2003 ) and in 2004 was the first German fund company to receive approval for a single hedge fund

In 2009, Lupus alpha Business Solutions GmbH (labs) was founded as a wholly owned subsidiary of Lupus alpha Asset Management. Labs had its origins as the internal IT department of today's parent company and develops software products for asset managers, capital management companies, custodians, insurance companies, asset managers and family offices. The focus is on the areas of data management, data warehousing and reporting.

In 2011, Lupus alpha was converted into a non-listed stock corporation.

At the beginning of 2019, the subsidiary Lupus alpha Business Solutions GmbH (labs) was sold to Universal-Investment and will be continued as an independent company under the name UI labs. With the sale, Matthias Biedenkapp is also leaving the management of Lupus alpha and will be replaced by Götz Albert.

Lupus alpha is based on partnership. The group of partners consists of a total of eight partners. Four partners from the group of partners form the Executive Committee (EC). The EC is the company's central management body. The members of the Executive Committee are the CEO Ralf Lochmüller, the CFO Michael Frick, the CIOs of the two major investment areas of Lupus alpha Dr. Götz Albert and Alexander Raviol as well as the CSO Dr. Markus Zuber. The EC defines the long-term corporate strategy, and the definition and achievement of short and medium-term goals is controlled by the EC. The Executive Committee is responsible for the operational management of Lupus alpha and all decisions at company level.

Lupus alpha currently manages around € 11 billion ( AuM as of 04/2020) from mostly institutional investors with over 90 employees .

Business areas

The Alternative Solutions division (previously Absolute Return ) is characterized by the combination of asymmetrical structures and alternative return drivers. The alternative solutions strategies at Lupus alpha include investments in volatility and equity hedging strategies.

The funds in the Small & Mid Caps segment   cover the entire spectrum of listed small caps in Europe - from micro caps and small caps to mid caps. There are currently six strategies in the small and mid caps segment which, in addition to investments in small caps with different market capitalizations in various geographical regions of Europe, also include dividend and long / short strategies.

The third product area of ​​Lupus alpha, Advanced Fixed Income, comprises collateralized loan obligations and global convertible bonds. These are specialized asset classes from the bond sector. These investment concepts are characterized by a lower duration risk and higher income potential than classic bond investments such as government bonds.
