The Luther Church (popularly Evangelical Church , Romanian Biserica evanghelică luterană ) is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Strada George Coșbuc at Piața Dr. IC Brătianu in the 1st district of Cetate in the western Romanian city of Timișoara ( German  Timişoara ).

history

The first Protestant church service in Timisoara was held in 1795. Since the evangelical congregation did not have a church, it initially took place in various municipal institutions. In 1824 the United Evangelical Community ( Romanian Comunitatea Protestantă Unită ) was founded and the building of the church was decided. The Protestant church was built in the classicist style from 1837 to 1839 according to plans by the architect Anton Schmidt. The solemn consecration of the church took place on October 27, 1839. In 1890 the association split into the Protestant and Reformed faiths. The church was retrofitted in 1901 with a tower, in which three bells were installed in 1903.

On one side of the church is the rectory and on the other is a three-story building originally intended as the Evangelical Lutheran School , Lutheran . This had been functioning as a boys 'school since 1825, into which a girls' school was integrated in 1859. In 1869 the Evangelical Lutheran School was closed because the city administration established municipal schools and withdrew subsidies from the Evangelical Church.
