The Lucerne Old Town Festival took place between 1977 and 2007 on the last Saturday in June on both sides of the Reuss in the heart of Lucerne city center. 50,000 to 60,000 people each attended this event.

Around 60 bands and formations played on 17 festival sites. In culinary terms, the guests were offered a wide range of delicacies according to the respective square motto.

All around 800 helpers at the Old Town Festival in Lucerne worked voluntarily and without pay. The net proceeds from the event went to charitable organizations in the region through the Lucerne Foundation . In recent years this has been over 100,000 francs.

The 31st Lucerne Old Town Festival took place on June 30, 2007. 60,000 visitors - a record - came to the festive event.

Due to security concerns in view of the Euro 08 taking place in June 2008 and the close proximity to the federal yodelling festival in Lucerne, the Lucerne city council has refused permission to hold the 2008 event.

Since 2009 the festival has been held again on the last weekend in June under the new name of the Lucerne Festival , with the Lucerne Lake Night Festival also being integrated into the event at the same time .
