The Lyndon Baines Johnson Ranch , often just called LBJ Ranch , is a ranch near the settlement of Stonewall in the US state of Texas . The property was the residence of former US President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908–1973). Because of this, the ranch is often referred to as the "Texas White House". Today the entire property is a museum. Together with Lyndon Baines Johnson Boyhood Home , 22 kilometers away, the ranch forms the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park .

Description and history

The LBJ Ranch is located near the small town of Stonewall (hometown of Lyndon B. Johnson) in central Texas (Texas Hill Country) . The Pedernales River flows past the ranch .

The property was built back in the 1890s. In 1951 the ranch was purchased by Lyndon B. Johnson, who was then a Senator . When Johnson became Vice President under John F. Kennedy in 1961 and became US President himself in 1963 , he often withdrew to the LBJ Ranch to take political time off. However, in addition to private friends, various official guests were received on the ranch, both American politicians and representatives of foreign governments. In December 1963, the then German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard was a guest at the LBJ Ranch. Press conferences were also held at the property when Johnson was there. During Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency, the LBJ Ranch was nicknamed the Texas White House ("Texas White House "). After resigning from office in January 1969, Johnson retired to his ranch, where he resided for the rest of his life.

After Johnson's death in January 1973, he was buried near the ranch and his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, lived on the property until her death in July 2007. Since 2008 the ranch has been part of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library & Museum and is therefore open to visitors. The interior has hardly changed since the 1960s: for example, President Johnson's original workstation has been preserved for posterity.

In addition to several swimming pools, the property also has an adjacent airfield and a golf course.
