Astatinae is a subfamily of the Crabronidae within the digger wasps (Spheciformes), which includes around 137 species worldwide. According to Pulawski (2009) it comprises four genera. In Europe the subfamily is represented with 30 species in two genera. Some authors also add the genus Dinetus to the subfamily , but this is now the only genus in its own subfamily Dinetinae within the Crabronidae.

features

The species of the Astatinae are often black and red in color. They differ from the similar species of the genus Tachysphex, among other things, by a well-developed wing mark on the forewings, by the veining of the hind wings, in which the anal cell ends after the branching off of the medial artery, by two spores on the rails ( tibia ) of the middle legs as well as through normally formed point eyes ( ocelli ). The females carry a row of thick, curved, tightly fitting bristles on the pygidial field. The compound eyes of the males touch at the apex.

Way of life

Males can often be observed when they lurk on exposed stones, wood or fallen leaves on the ground and constantly turn around in order to be able to see all directions. After being blown up, they always return to their waiting room. The females create their nests in the earth. The brood is fed with bedbugs .
