Crabronidae is a family of digger wasps (Spheciformes). It includes 200 genera in eight subfamilies with over 8720 species. It is represented in Europe with 816 species and subspecies. The family was originally assigned to the Sphecidae in the form of a few subfamilies and was raised to family rank on the basis of morphological studies. However, a recent molecular genetic study very strongly suggests that the Crabronidae are not monophyletic .

Way of life

The females provide their larvae with prey, which are carried into the nest. Depending on the species, different animals such as aphids , bees , beetles , bed bugs , butterflies , cicadas , cockroaches , long- and short-feeler terrors , flies , praying mantises or spiders are hunted. A few species live as kleptoparasites and feed their brood with prey from other wasps. In some subfamilies, especially the Pemphredoninae and Philanthinae , the nests are sometimes created jointly.
