With around 2000 species worldwide, Crabroninae is the most species-rich subfamily of the Crabronidae within the digger wasps (Spheciformes). According to Pulawski (2009), it comprises 107 genera in seven tribes . In Europe the subfamily is represented with 318 species in 28 genera. Two tribes are neotropically distributed, the rest of them have their distribution in the Old World . The main distribution area is Africa.

The subfamily Crabroninae includes a large group of digger wasps of various shapes. It differs from the other subfamilies by only one spur on the rails ( tibia ) of the middle legs and simple male genitalia , in which the volsella does not consist of cuspis and mobile digitus .
