Ectemnius is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. About 160 species are known, making the genusthe second largest of the Crabronini tribeafter Crossocerus . 26 species are common in Europe.

features

The medium to large digger wasps usually have yellow bands or spots on their abdomen. The point eyes ( ocelli ) are arranged in a flat triangle. Males and females have 12 antennae, these are elongated, hollowed or toothed in some species. In contrast to Crabro , the female's pygidial field is not flat, but hollowed out in the shape of a channel.

Way of life

The females make their nests in softwood or the pulp of stems. The nest is hollowed out with the help of the mandibles . In Central Europe the brood is supplied with flies from different families.
