Tachytes is a species-rich genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. 296 species are known worldwide, the main distribution area is the tropics and the temperate latitudes. About 20 species are distributed in the Mediterranean area, nine species occur in Europe, three of which are native to Central Europe.

features

The medium-sized digger wasps have a sturdy build and are very hairy, which is why they have a bee-like shape. The body is often haired with gold or silver shine, and transverse ligaments are usually formed on the abdomen. The rear point eyes ( ocelli ) are sickle-shaped, long and narrow. They are removed from the anterior point eye by less than their length. The females are short and closely hairy on the pygidial field, the males on the seventh abdominal segment.

Way of life

The females of most species lay their nests in the ground. The brood is supplied with locusts of the families Acrididae , Tettigoniidae , Tetrigidae and Tridactylidae . Only the species Tachytes bidens and Tachytes ambidens , which occur in south-western Russia, Iran and Turkmenistan, provide their brood with caterpillars . The locusts are transported in flight by grasping the antennae with the mandibles . In addition, the prey is held with the legs. The nest usually consists of several cells that are a few centimeters to over a meter deep in the ground. One to thirteen prey animals are brought into a cell, and only then is the egg laid. The adults fly to flowers.

Systematics

Tachytes belongs to the tribe Larrini within the subfamily Crabroninae .
