Miscophus is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. 150 species are known worldwide, which are mainly found in the Old World, especially in the Mediterranean area. There are 48 species in Europe.

features

The small, often dark-colored digger wasps have short wings and relatively large heads. The animals have two submarginal cells , the second is petiolate. The species are sometimes difficult to distinguish from one another.

Way of life

The females create their nests in loose sand. At the end of a corridor only two to five centimeters deep, there is usually only one cell. The brood is supplied with several small spiders, the individual species are specialized in certain groups of prey. The nest is either closed or left open when it flies out. The prey is transported to the nest in flight, with the front legs being grabbed with the mandibles . The last piece to the nest is covered walking, only short flight jumps are made. It is not uncommon for several legs to be bitten off from the prey. The eggs are laid on the last prey.

The adults are very active and move around very nimbly on the ground like wasps .
