The Trypoxylini are a tribe of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family . Over 500 species in six genera are known worldwide, in Europe there are 20 species in two genera. It is a well-developed group of the Crabroninae . The most important genus is Trypoxylon with around 350 species. The main distribution area of ​​the worldwide distributed tribe is the Neotropis , in Central Europe the group is only represented by the genus Trypoxylon .

features

The digger wasps have an elongated, slender body. It is black with the exception of a few tropical and Australian species, which have red or yellow markings. The tribe includes species with strongly margined inner eye rims and reduced wing veins .

Way of life

The species of the genus Trypoxylon nest in existing cavities in stems or wood or build nests from clay. However, other species also dig their own nests in the ground. In some species of the genus Pison and Trypoxylon , the males help the female build or guard the nest. The brood is supplied with spiders by all species.
