The MÁV series 242 was a tank locomotive series of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV).
history
In the 1930s, which allowed the global economic crisis not to invest heavily in rail vehicles. That is why the Hungarian State Railways decided to run light express trains at high speed. The 242 series was developed for such trains. It was a double-coupled tank locomotive with two leading and two trailing axles. The first two machines were delivered by MÁVAG in 1936. They had a steel fire rifle and a tilting grate with which it was possible to easily remove the large amounts of slag that arose from burning Hungarian coal. The locomotives reached 152 km / h on test drives, but were only approved for 120 km / h. They had a streamlined fairing that was later removed from the wheels for better maintainability.
The next two units in this series were only built by MAVAG in 1940. Since the steel fire rifles of the first machines delivered already had cracks, this time copper fire rifles were installed.
Although these vehicles fully met the expectations placed in them, there were no further orders because of the war events and because more powerful express locomotives were actually needed.
