Group of five

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Group of Five or The Mighty Heap ( Russian. Mogutschaja kutschka , kyrill. Могучая кучка) was a group of 19th century Russian composers : Mili Balakirew , Alexander Borodin , César Cui , Modest Musorgsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov . They called themselves the novators .

The composers united in Saint Petersburg in 1862 . The eminent art critic Vladimir Stasov acted as her mentor. Her aim was to promote national Russian music in the footsteps of Mikhail Glinka . The group of five thus set itself apart from other Russian composers who were more oriented towards Western European models. The best-known representatives of this other group of composers include Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Anton Rubinstein .
