The Médaille des blessés de guerre ( German  medal of war wounded ) is a French decoration . It is an award for soldiers who were wounded in the course of a war or an assignment abroad. In terms of protocol, it follows the Médaille de la Gendarmerie Nationale .

The badge was originally called "Insigne des blessés de guerre" during the First World War at the suggestion of the writer Maurice Barrès by a resolution of the French parliament, the Chambre des députés, on December 11, 1916 brought into being. In the following years it was awarded to war invalids, prisoners of war, deported members of the Resistance as well as to those injured during further military conflicts.

A hundred years later, on August 17, 2016, the original badge was replaced by the medal by Decree 2016-1130 of the French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe . Their protocol status is determined by a further decree of February 24, 2019.

Award

According to the decree, the medal can be awarded to:

  • Soldiers suffering from a physical or mental injury. This wound must be attested by the armed forces medical services and confirmed by the Ministry of Defense.
  • Prisoners of war who have suffered physical or psychological wounds while in detention.

The war wounded medal is made of gilded bronze with a diameter of 30 mm. It consists mainly of a large, bright red enameled five-pointed star on a crown of half laurels (left) and half oak leaves (right).
