metier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With Metier ( double. Métier (m)) is a generally business meant that someone operates or understand.

It can be translated with the German terms Beruf , Handwerk , Gewerbe or field of activity. Since in France some professions are understood as high craft forms of art that have been perfected over time, such as haute couture and haute cuisine , the term is often used in connection with artistic activities. This is an expression of the fact that it is more than just a profession, it plays into the fact that someone “understands his profession”, is a master of his subject . In addition, a more broadly defined profession is often understood as a profession or the entire specialist area.

In general, the French Chamber of Crafts represents the interests of its 250 professions.
