The Mühlenberg is probably the remainder of a medieval hilltop castle of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte) near Bettingen, a district of Schmelz in the Saarlouis district in Saarland .
There is no documentary evidence of a castle in Bettingen (first known as Bettinga in the 10th century ), but there are several indications for the existence of a castle on the Mühlenberg. The 6 m high hill, which was partially removed during the construction of the railway line, is of natural origin, but shows traces of human work: the slopes are evenly steep and the crest has apparently been flattened to make room for building. During a site inspection on the hilltop in 1959, Robert Seyler found numerous, probably medieval, lumps of mortar, pieces of slate from the roofing and animal bones. On the north side, untouched by the erosion during the construction of the railway, a low step surrounds the foot of the hill, an indication of a ditch that has been flooded over time .
