Location on the old city wall

The mill tower was part of the city fortifications of Kranenburg, which was built from 1395 and served as a city windmill until the First World War . Today the building is used as a museum.

history

A first windmill in Kranenburg is mentioned as early as 1299; probably their location was in the so-called mill field . As part of the construction of the city wall, which began in 1395, a new windmill was also built. Its existence is indirectly documented for 1398 by the first mention of the name Mühlenstraße .

The mill operation was maintained until the First World War. Demolition of the tower began around 1920 until the ruins were acquired and restored in 1922 by the Association for Homeland Security , which was founded for this purpose . A local history museum was opened here in 1932, the inventory of which was largely lost in the Second World War .

In 1949 the museum was provisionally reopened. In 1970 the exhibition in the Mühlenturm was concentrated on religious folk art in order to find a meaningful division of labor with the Katharinenhof Museum, which opened in 1961 . At the end of the 1980s, the tower had to be closed due to structural defects. The building was thoroughly renovated by 2004, so that a newly designed exhibition could be opened in 2006.

exhibition

The permanent local history exhibition History in the Tower has been presented in the mill tower since 2006 . On the five storeys, the areas early life in our region , early cultures on the Lower Rhine , settlement and rule , faith and church , and from the windmill to the landmark are dealt with.
