Münzgasse in Günzburg, former Judengasse

The Muenzgasse (former Jewish quarter ) in Gunzburg , the county seat of the district Günzburg in Bavarian administrative region of Swabia , was in the late Middle Ages created.

History and description

Münzgasse on the southeastern edge of the old town was the former residential area of the Jews . The oldest surviving structure comes from the 17th and 18th centuries. Century. The narrow street leads inside the city wall (14th / 15th century). The small houses adapt to the course of the city wall and are mostly on the eaves side . There was originally a narrow defensive alley between the houses and the city wall, and the houses were not allowed to obstruct the battlement at the top of the wall. Only later, probably from the 18th century, did the battlements lead through the houses. The round tower at the western end of Münzgasse was called the Judenturm . According to tradition, the largest house, today Münzgasse 1, was the synagogue . On March 4, 1617, Margrave Karl von Burgau ordered that all Jews of the Margraviate Burgau had to leave their places of residence and sell their houses within a year. The name Judengasse survived into the 18th century.

Only after the establishment of the front Austrian mint in 1763 did the alley get its current name. The eastern half of the alley was named Eisenhausgasse because of the prison in the corner tower of the city fortifications.
