Maris is the name of a Dutch family of painters from the late 19th century that can be assigned to the Hague School .

The most important artists from this family are the three brothers:

  • Jacob Hendricus Maris (1837–1899): he painted figures, after 1872 also landscapes and city history. He later developed a coloring that is characterized by foggy gray and brown colors. He had a great influence on his contemporaries among the Dutch painters.
  • Matthijs Maris (1839–1917): At first he worked in the same style as Jacob; later he went his own way: his works became more and more vague, so that one could speak of dream faces; his later works reflect symbolic rather than real objects.
  • Willem Maris (1844–1910): he painted Dutch landscapes with cattle and other cattle, ducks and other animals, in lighter colors than his brothers.
