Mōdraniht

Mōdraniht ( mothers night ) denotes an Anglo-Saxon winter festival. It is documented for the period between 500 and 700 in Beda Venerabili's work De temporum ratione . In chapter 15 De Mensibus Anglorum (The English Months), the author writes:

“But they begin the year on the eighth calendar of January, when we celebrate the birth of the Lord. And this same night, which is particularly sacred to us, is called Modranicht by the pagans, which means night of mothers ... "
