M50 art district
The M50 Arts District (Chinese: 莫干山 路 50 号) or "M50" is a contemporary art district in Shanghai , China . There are more than 140 studios and galleries here. Located in an old industrial district, the creative community has been attracting local and international visitors since 2002.
history
The facility at 50 Moganshan Road was once the Xinhe Cotton Mill. In the middle of the disused industrial area, artists found cheap rents and large studios at the beginning of the millennium. The artist Xue Song therefore founded the M50 contemporary art district in 2000. In 2005 the district was officially recognized as a cultural district by the government. Today M50 is organized under the Shanghai M50 Cultural and Creative Industrial Development Co.
Artists and galleries
The M50 thrives on a wide range of different art galleries. In addition to traditional Chinese art, you can see progressive works in the larger galleries such as Vanguard Gallery , Chronus Art Center and Island6 Arts Center .
