New Year Turner
Sylvester Turner (* 27. September 1954 in Houston , Texas ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and acting mayor of Houston, Texas.
Early years
Turner was born in Houston on September 27, 1954, the sixth of nine children and the son of a painter and a chambermaid. He attended the local Klein High School and then graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in political science , which he successfully completed as a Bachelor of Arts . In addition, he achieved a doctorate as a lawyer by the Harvard Law School . Immediately afterwards he worked as a lawyer and eventually founded his own law firm Barnes & Turner in 1983. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he also taught at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston.
Political career
His political career began in 1984 when he ran for the office of Harris County Commissioner , but lost. Four years later he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, where he represented District 139 in Harris County . He held this seat until 2016. In 1991 and 2003 he ran for the office of mayor of Houston, but lost both times to other candidates. It was not until 2015 that he was able to prevail against the Republican challenger Bill King with just under 51 percent of the vote, succeeding Annise Parker, who was no longer running due to a term limit .
Private life
Turner was married to Cheryl Turner from 1983 to 1991, with whom he has a daughter.
