Annise Danette Parker (born May 17, 1956 in Houston , Texas ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). She was the Mayor of Houston from January 2010 to January 2016.

Life

Parker grew up in a suburb of Houston. In 1971 her father, who was employed by the Red Cross , was transferred to Germany and she spent two years in Mannheim . She graduated from Rice University and graduated in 1978. She then worked in the oil and gas industry for over 20 years. She was a member of Houston City Council since 1997 and was re-elected in 1999 and 2001. From 2003 she worked as the city's accounting manager; also in this office she was confirmed twice.

In November 2009 she won the most votes in the mayor election, but not the required majority. Therefore, in December there was a runoff election against the runner-up Gene Locke, which she won with over 53 percent of the votes cast. In January 2010, she succeeded Bill White , who had been in office since 2003 and was not allowed to run again after three terms. Annise Parker became the first openly gay mayor of a major city in the United States. Parker is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Holocaust Museum Houston and the Board of Directors of the Houston Zoo. After three terms in office, she was not allowed to run again. Sylvester Turner was her successor .

Parker has lived with partner Kathy Hubbart since 1990 and has adopted two children with her .
