from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Martin Foote (born June 22, 1950 in Chester ) is a Canadian mathematician who deals with finite simple groups (and their classification) and number theory.

Foote studied at the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree in 1972 and received his doctorate in 1976 from the University of Cambridge with John Griggs Thompson (Finite Groups of Component Type). In 1975/76 and 1978/79 he was a Research Fellow at Trinity College Cambridge and an instructor at Caltech from 1976 to 1978 . In 1979 he became an assistant professor at Rutgers University , 1980 at the University of Minnesota and 1981 at the University of Vermont , where he became professor in 1983.

He is involved in the development of the classification set for finite simple groups by Ronald Solomon , Richard Lyons and Daniel Gorenstein .
