MAN L2x6V 17.5 / 18A
The increase in the performance of the twelve-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines practiced by Maybach-Motorenbau by supercharging prompted MAN to increase the power of its range of twin-shaft engines by supercharging without significantly changing the engine design, structural dimensions and engine weight. The Deutsche Reichsbahn decided to carry out a large-scale test with these engines on the four DR 137 156 to 159 railcars under unfavorable topographical conditions. Apart from these vehicles, no other vehicles with this engine configuration are known.
Structure and components
Essentially, the engine structure corresponded to the basic version MAN L2x6V 17.5 / 18, the output of which could be increased to 411 kW (560 PS) by the Büchi charging group of the type VTY S 401 with double intake. The charging group stood vertically between the two rows of cylinders in the V of the engine. Air was sucked in through Delbag labyrinth filters . The engine with 174 g / PSh consumed 13% less fuel than the naturally aspirated engine . Due to the structure of the engine, it had to be housed in a separate machine room.

Operating experience
The railcars equipped with this engine achieved mileages of 140,000 to 200,000 km in the period up to the start of the war. Since these assignments were preferably carried out on the Black Forest Railway between Offenburg and Konstanz , they convey roughly the performance and reliability of the engines. After the war, two of the aforementioned railcars ran with the aforementioned engines until 1962, only when two were converted to the Maybach GTO 6 .
