MISTY1 (or MISTY-1 ) is a symmetric block encryption algorithm developed by Mitsuru Matsui and others for Mitsubishi Electric in 1995 . It is one of the selected algorithms in the NESSIE project and was proposed for use by the Japanese government's CRYPTREC project .

The name can stand for "Mitsubishi Improved Security Technology" (for example: "Mitsubishi improved security technology") or for the initials of the developers involved (Mitsuru Matsui, Tetsuya Ichikawa, Toru Sorimachi, Toshio Tokita and Atsuhiro Yamagishi).

MISTY1 is a Feistel network with a variable number of passes (any multiple of 4; 8 are recommended) and works with 64- bit blocks and has a key length of 128 bits. MISTY1 has an innovative recursive structure.

It has been proven to be secure against linear and differential cryptanalysis .

The algorithm (described in RFC 2994 ) is freely available for academic (non-profit) use, but is protected by patents .

Other algorithms

Two related designs are MISTY2 and KASUMI . The latter is in confidentiality and integrity algorithms in 3GPP - mobile phones used.
