MLDonkey is a free file sharing program that can access different networks.
The following networks are supported:
Support for Gnutella and Gnutella2 has been discontinued since version 2.9.0, as they are not maintained by any maintainer .
In addition, HTTP , FTP and SFTP / SCP downloads can also be carried out with MLDonkey.
MLDonkey was developed primarily for Unix-based systems (GNU / Linux , various BSDs , macOS / Darwin), meanwhile there is also an executable Windows port.
One of the big differences to comparable software applications such as Kazaa or Lopster is the strict separation into a core application ( core ), which provides the actual functionality, and an interface, which provides interaction with the user. There are three different protocols available for this:
- HTTP - A web interface can be accessed using a web browser .
- Telnet - The core can be completely controlled via Telnet.
- Own MLDonkey GUI protocol - There are various GUI clients that enable access.
This separation is particularly attractive in order to control the core from another computer. Only one connection needs to be established (using one of the three variants mentioned) to send commands. No connection from the user interface to the MLDonkey kernel is necessary for the download itself.
MLDonkey can obtain the same file from the eDonkey2000 network and the Overnet at the same time and offer it there, so it is a hybrid like the official eDonkey2000 client.
