MR16 (also MR-16 ) is a standard format of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). 'MR' stands for 'multifaceted reflector' (= multi-faceted reflector ).

identification

MR16 lamps can be identified by their three-letter designation (according to ANSI). The sequence of letters denotes a special lamp type, followed by the power, lamp shape and beam angle. The number 16 refers to the diameter of "16 eighths" of an inch (16/8 "or 51 mm).

Most MR16 lamps with a GU5.3 pin base are made for 12 volts alternating current , the lamps for 230/240 volts usually have a GU10 bayonet base to prevent mix-ups.

Many LED-based MR16 lamps are also compatible with 12 volts direct current - but in some cases the electrical performance data can change.

Dimensions

Standard halogen MR16 with GU5.3 base: usually approx. 50 mm diameter, length of the glass body usually approx. 38 mm

use

The MR16 occurs in both LED lamps and halogen lamps . The LED version often lacks the typical multi-faceted reflector. The MR11 or MR8 standard is often used for the smaller lamp versions, in which the pins are also closer together ( GU4 )

Markings

The following ANSI codes are used to identify different combinations of capacity and beam angle of the MR16 lamps.

  • ESX: 20 watts, 10 degrees (20MR16 / 10 °)
  • BAB: 20 watts, 40 degrees (20MR16 / 40 °)
  • FMW : 35 watts, 36 degrees (35MR16 / 36 °)
  • EXT: 50 watts, 15 degrees (50MR16 / 15 °)
  • EXZ: 50 watts, 25 degrees (50MR16 / 25 °)
  • EXN: 50 watts, 40 degrees (50MR16 / 40 °)
  • FPA: 65 watts, 15 degrees (65MR16 / 15 °)
  • FPC: 65 watts, 25 degrees (65MR16 / 25 °)
  • FPB: 65 watts, 40 degrees (65MR16 / 40 °)
  • EYF: 75 watts, 15 degrees (75MR16 / 15 °)
  • EYJ: 75 watts, 25 degrees (75MR16 / 25 °)
  • EYC: 75 watts, 40 degrees (75MR16 / 40 °)

Note: MR16 lamps are available in many other variants and markings; the codes used can also differ between the various suppliers.

  • VNSP (Very Narrow Spot ): less than 8 degrees
  • NSP (Narrow Spot): 8-15 degrees
  • SP (spot): 8-20 degrees
  • NFL (Narrow flood): 24-30 degrees
  • FL (Flood): 35-40 degrees
  • WFL (Wide flood): 55-60 degrees
  • VWFL (Very Wide Flood ): 60 degrees or more
