Ma'mun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

al-Ma'mun ( DMG al-Maʾmūn "the reliable", "trustworthy") is the name or surname of the following Islamic rulers:

  • the Abbasid Abu Dscha'far Abdallah al-Ma'mun , 813–833 caliph of Baghdad
  • the two Khorezm Shahs Abu Ali Ma'mun I ibn Muhammad (r. 995–997) and Abu l-Abbas Ma'mun II. ibn Ma'mun (I) (r. 1008-1017) from the dynasty of Ma'munids
  • the Hammudide (Idriside) Al-Qasim al-Ma'mun , 1018-1021 and 1023 Caliph of Cordoba and at the same time ruler in Málaga, Seville, Ceuta and Alcegiras
  • the Dhu'nunide Abu l-Hasan Yahya (I.) al-Ma'mun, 1043–75 Emir of Toledo
  • the Almohad Abu l-Ula Idris (I.) al-Ma'mun , 1227–1232 caliph in parts of the Maghreb and the Iberian Peninsula

Because of the proximity of at least the named caliphs to the alleged heresy against orthodox Islam or Shia, al-Ma'mun is no longer popular when searching for names for newborns in Sunni-Islamic families and is therefore rather rare - in contrast to most other caliphs - or sultan's names. Shiite families tend to prefer typical Shiite names.
