MaRS Discovery District is a non-profit research park established in 2000 in Toronto , Ontario , Canada . The research center is located in the immediate vicinity of the University of Toronto , in the Discovery District. The research center is largely funded by public bodies such as the Province of Ontario and the state government. Further income is generated from the research laboratories of the individual pharmaceuticals and other research companies and laboratories.

The name MaRS originally came from a file, but was subsequently adopted and stands for Medical and Related Sciences . In addition to classical medical and pharmaceutical research, MaRS also conducts research in information technology , engineering and social innovation for medical purposes.

Facilities

The research facility is located on the corner of College Street and University Avenue, in close proximity to the University of Toronto and its affiliated research institutes and laboratories.

Phase I.

The buildings of the research center, which was completed in phase I in 2005, include:

  • The Heritage Building (a wing of the Toronto General Hospital ),
  • The atrium
  • The South Tower
  • The Toronto Medical Discovery Tower

The Heritage Building The four-story, historically preserved Heritage Building houses offices of associations, the pharmaceutical industry, and offices of Canadian universities in the province of Ontario.

The Atrium The MaRS Atrium is a glass-roofed, publicly accessible passage that also includes all important entrances to other buildings, which the public are not allowed to enter. The atrium provides access to the Heritage Building , the South Tower and the Medical Discovery Tower . On the ground floor there is a conference center where public and private lectures and other events take place. A media center and video conference rooms are located in the basement. There are also several restaurants and cafes that can also be used by the public.

The South Tower

The South Tower is an 11-story building with several incubators , laboratories and research centers. The building has an area of ​​19,000 m 2 . The building has several clean rooms and the corresponding electrical systems.

Toronto Medical Discovery Tower

With around 37,000 m 2 of wet laboratories, the 15-storey building houses the scientific equipment and serves as the headquarters of the research center, the University Health Network and the Hospital for Sick Children. The building is on the corner of College and Elizabeth Streets. The building was equipped with the latest technology for research purposes. 80% of the laboratories are designed for wet research and 20% for dry research. The building was designed so that it can be used flexibly at any time.

Phase II

Construction phase II, which was designed by the architects Bregman + Hamann, includes a 20-storey building in the western area of ​​the research park. Upon completion, the building should have a research area of ​​74,000 m 2 . Construction began at the end of 2007. Completion was scheduled for spring 2010. However, due to the economic crisis, construction work was interrupted for some time. Construction work continued in July 2011. The planned completion was therefore delayed until autumn 2013.
