Jürgen Gehl

Jürgen Gehl (born July 6, 1930 in Berlin ; † January 25, 2012 in Wachtberg-Berkum ) was a German lawyer and diplomat .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hamburg , Gehl studied law and history in Freiburg and Tübingen . In 1951 he became a member of the Derendingia fraternity in Tübingen . After passing both legal state exams, he moved to Heidelberg in 1954/1955 . In 1956 he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD. After receiving an Oxford scholarship from the Universitätsgesellschaft Hamburg, he studied modern European history for three years at the University of Oxford . With a thesis on the annexation of Austria, he was at Alan Bullock to Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1961 Gehl joined the Foreign Service . After completing his preparatory service, he first became permanent representative at the embassy in Brazzaville (1963 to 1965). This was followed by his appointment as permanent representative to the United Nations in New York (1965 to 1968), at the headquarters in Bonn (1968 to 1969) and at the embassy in Seoul (1969 to 1973). After working again for several years at the headquarters of the Foreign Office, he came to the embassy in New Delhi in 1977 , before he was permanent representative at the embassy in Prague from 1980 to 1984 and finally at the embassy in Islamabad until 1988 . In 1988 he was appointed ambassador to Liberia . Gehl was Ambassador to Mozambique from 1991 to 1993 and Ambassador to Bangladesh from 1993 to 1995 . In 1995 he finally retired.
