Mabel Island

Mabel Island (in Argentina Islote Piragua ) is a small island in the archipelago of the Southern Orkney Islands . It is located 2.5 km northwest of Cape Mabel off the north coast of Laurie Island .

Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped it in 1933 and named it after the name of the cape of the same name. Its namesake is Agnes Mabel Kerr, fiancee and future wife of Harvey Pirie , surgeon and geologist of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-1904) under the direction of William Speirs Bruce . The Argentine naming after a pirogue was made descriptively based on the shape of the island.
