Machar (saint)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Machar was an Irish-born monk and missionary of the Irish Scottish Church , who was mainly active in Scotland in the 6th century .

Machar, an Irish nobleman according to legend, was baptized by Bishop Colman . Together with Columban "the Elder" he first came to the island of Iona and later drove the missionary work of Pictish tribes on the island of Mull and especially in the area around Aberdeen . Machar is often incorrectly referred to as the first bishop of the Diocese of Aberdeen , whose origin, however, is at Dufftown . However, there was a bishop only around the year 1000. Recently, the claim has been made that Machar and the holy mongoose are one and the same person.

The St. Machar Cathedral in the old town of Aberdeen traces its foundation to Machar, in the year 580, and is therefore also named after him.
