Mackem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Mackem (also Makem , Mak'em ) is a native of Sunderland in north east England . The local Sunderland dialect is also called this.

The term was introduced by seafarers in Newcastle in the 19th century but did not become widely used until the late 1980s and early 1990s. It comes from the expression "we mak 'em, you tak' em", which refers to the ships built in Sunderland; however, there is no longer any shipbuilding industry in Sunderland. The spelling “mak” expresses that the High English diphthong in “make” is a monophthong in northern English dialects.
