Macquarrie Mausoleum
The Macquarrie Mausoleum is a mausoleum on the Scottish Hebridean island of Mull . It is located in the interior of the island about 600 m northwest of the old Gruline House . The remains of Lachlan Macquaries , the former governor of New South Wales who died in 1824 and was born on the neighboring island of Ulva , and his second wife Elizabeth, who died in 1835, are buried in the building. A commemorative marble plaque on the southern front refers to Macquarie's contributions to the formation of the state of Australia . In 1971 the Macquarrie Mausoleum was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.
description
The mausoleum was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1824 . The small, elongated building consists of large ashlar stones. The simply designed building ends with a gable roof . Marble slabs close the two entrance openings in the front sides. Inside the building has support pillars. The mausoleum stands in the middle of a round enclosure, which is separated by a quarry stone wall.
