Maculelê

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maculelê is a Brazilian fight dance . It has similar roots as Capoeira and is often practiced in connection with it. In contrast to Capoeira, however, it is a knife or stick fight - each fighter wields two so-called grimas or two large knives, as are customary for harvesting sugar cane. The fighting dance in the roda (the circle) is accompanied by the hand drum atabaque , alternating singing , clapping of hands and the rhythmic beating of the sticks.
