Madog Fychan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Madog Fychan († December 7, 1269 ) was a lord of the Welsh principality of Powys Fadog .

He was a son of Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor and a brother of Gruffydd Maelor ap Madog . After the death of his father in 1236 he inherited part of Powys Fadog and, like his grandfather Gruffydd Maelor I, was a supporter of Llywelyn ap Iorwerth in the fight against the English. In contrast to his brother Gruffydd Maelor, he supported his son and successor Dafydd ap Llywelyn after Llywelyn's death . After his death he supported his nephew Llywelyn ap Gruffydd . He and his brother Gruffydd Maelor belonged to the Welsh delegation that signed a treaty in Scotland in 1258 between the Welsh princes and the Scottish nobleman Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith and his supporters. He died on the same day as his brother Gruffydd Maelor. He was probably buried like him in the Valle Crucis Abbey, of which he was the patron.
