Mafa (ethnic group)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mafa (also Matakam ) are an ethnic group from West Africa. They primarily inhabit the north of Cameroon and the northeast of Nigeria ; in the Mandara Mountains they represent the largest ethnic group. About 200,000 people consider themselves Mafa. They speak Mafa , a variant of the Chad language .

It is believed that the Mafa fled to the Mandara Mountains from persecution by the Fulbe ; but there are also indications that they could have lived in this area for some time. The foreign name Matakam comes from the Fulbe .
