MAFAC - Manufacture Arvernoise de Freins et Accessoires pour Cycles (Arveni Manufaktur for bicycle brakes and accessories) was a French manufacturer of bicycle brakes .

The company was after the Second World War established as "Securité", but changed its name in 1947 in MAFAC. The company specialized in cantilever brakes. Many French racing bikes ( Peugeot , Gitane etc.) were fitted with Mafac brakes. At the end of the 1980s, MAFAC stopped production.

With 12 victories, the company was one of the most successful bike suppliers in the Tour de France . Greg LeMond , Bernard Hinault , Laurent Fignon , Jacques Anquetil (five Tour victories) and others braked their bikes with Mafac brakes.

Brake models

The early models were mostly cantilever brakes , which were produced until the early 1980s. Center-pull brakes were produced for this very early on.

Cantilever models were:

  • Kathy
  • Driver
  • Criterium

MAFAC center pull brakes were the models

  • tiger
  • Racer
  • Raid
  • Competition
  • 2000

The good braking performance of wheels with wide sleeves led to the use of MAFAC brakes on the first mountain bikes. Mafac brakes were used on the first series-produced MTBs such as the 1982 Specialized Stumpjumper.
