The magnetographic printing process was developed in the early 1980s and first used in a commercial product. In this printing process, data from the digital inventory is printed without contact. This process also includes electrophotography, ink-jet, thermal transfer and electrostatic printing.

Printing principle

In magnetography, tiny magnetic heads are magnetized point by point via the data memory . This is done through the magnetizable layer of the drum. Toner particles stick to these magnetized areas and are electrostatically transferred to the printing material and fixed by heat. The magnetic principle is very similar to the electrophotographic process (Indigo / Xeikon), but has some advantages:

  • The image generation does not require a light source and therefore no optical system.
  • The image generation does not have to be repeated over and over again, since the magnetization of the roller is retained indefinitely.
  • The magnetizable layer is much more durable than a photo semiconductor layer .
  • Sensitive printing materials are protected by cold fixing with xenon flash light at approx. 50 ° C.
