Mahmoud Sarsak (* 1987 ) is a football player for the Palestinian national football team .

Career

Sarsak started his football career in a small club in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip . As a member of the Palestinian youth team, he took part in an international match in Iraq.

Arrest and hunger strike

Sarsak was arrested on July 22, 2009 on the way to his club Balata Youth. He was then detained in what is known as administrative detention in an Israeli prison for three years without charge . On March 19, 2012, he started a hunger strike to protest the detention. In June 2012, professional footballers from all over the world launched a campaign for his release. For example, ex-soccer player Éric Cantona signed a letter to UEFA President Michel Platini calling for the Palestinian national player to be released immediately. The same appeal was also signed by Noam Chomsky and John Dugard . On July 10, 2012, Sarsak was released from custody.
