Excavations

Macedonian graves Katerini, grave A.

At the end of the 1960s, a destroyed kiln and building remains were found. Other building structures were destroyed by dredging, and parts of a burial chamber were noticed. Grave A is one of the earliest known examples of Macedonian graves. The excavations of both graves were carried out in May 1977. The discovery of a coin from the time of Amyntas III. allows tomb A to be dated to the 2nd quarter of the 4th century BC The shape of grave B was the same throughout the 4th century BC. In common use. Both graves were built from precisely manufactured limestone monoliths, and the inside is plastered and painted. The graves were covered flat, they have neither an entrance ( dromos ) nor the vaulted ceiling that is sometimes common. The stone roof structure of both graves has been partially removed so that one has a good view from above. Entry into the graves is not possible. A sheet metal cover protects the structures from weathering.

Grave A

The grave to the west has an antechamber and the actual burial chamber. Due to the design and equipment, the grave is seen as a transition form from the shaft graves to the Macedonian graves. The two chambers were separated by a double-leaf marble door, which has been completely preserved. As in the neighboring tombs of Korinos , the door was made as an imitation of a wooden door. Iron bands and their attachment by iron fittings are imitated. The floor is covered with stone slabs. The plastering of the inner walls is painted following the pattern of the smaller grave. In the burial chamber the remains of a stone kline can be seen on which the deceased was laid.

To keep the marble doors from falling over, they are supported by wooden struts and metal bars.

Grave B

The smaller grave to the east is designed as a single-chamber grave. It was decorated with a two-tone painting. The plastering of the upper layer of the monolithic masonry is painted with yellow paint, the plastering of the underlying blocks was decorated with red paint. The floor is covered with stone slabs.
